If you follow me on Facebook, you already know the story, but I have told it countless times. It is how a $59 purchase saved me over $2,500.

A few months ago, I had just picked up the kids from school and was on the same road I drive every day when one of the residents living on that road decided to pull out in front of me and block the road.  At this point, I had nowhere to go. My choices were simple: (1) move to the left-hand side of the road not know what was coming and risk a major head-on collision injuring my family and the other driver, or (2) hit the individual on the side of his car injuring him and my family, or (3) avoid all collision and stay safe. Well, I choose to avoid any collision with his car and try to squeeze between this mailbox and his car.

The mailbox ended up flying past my car as it collided with the front passenger side bumper, but it also damaged the right front quarter panel, the roof rail, and the passenger side door. The estimated damage was approximately $2,500.  I guess a concrete mailbox post is pretty secure.

Everyone was fine and no one was injured so I was not worried about it. However, since I did not have a collision with his vehicle, his insurance told me there was nothing they would do. Even after the other individual accepted full responsibility and told the responding officer, as well as his insurance company, it was his fault for blocking the road, I was told nothing can be done. The representative from his insurance company said there was nothing that could be done because I never hit his car. Crazy isn’t it.

After questioning the agent, she held her ground and I held mine. I was not at fault, and I would be calling back once I was home. She said that was my choice, but there was nothing they could do.

When I got home and called again the discussion became a little more clear when I said, “I have it all on dashcam.” At this point, the agent (a different one from the previous) said, “You do.” After telling her that it was in HD and plainly showed the incident, I sent it to their claims department. When she reviewed in about 5 minutes later while I waited on the phone, she said, “Yes, that is definitely his fault.” A few days later, I contacted them and began the process of fixing my car.

Before the call ended, she asked me the make and model of the camera because she has seen others and the footage from mine was the best she had seen.

So, this small, $59 purchase saved me $2,500 because they refused to pay and/or it saved me some court costs in dealing with it.

I choose it because it was inexpensive and has a forward and a rear-facing camera. It can be used for a reverse camera as well.

By the way, all of our cars have them now.
